I would very much appreciate a few more reviews for Balance of Powers – while I realise that it is not the world’s greatest novel, and will never be in the running for a literary prize, there are still elements of the book that really pleased me when I re-read it recently. I find it hard to believe I’m the only one who likes it.

Pulp fiction, in the sense of being a violent page-turner. Pulp Fiction, in the sense that like a Tarantino film, the bad guys are truly deserving of the violence meted out to them. Also like Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, the narrative starts at the end and circles back around.
The nonfiction appendix on how to avoid losing your home to foreclosure is a sad reminder that the sub-prime loan crisis affects the real lives of any.
Here’s Henry Powers and his friend Jeanine speaking:
“Hey! Where are you going? Downtown’s the other way.”
“I know. I’ve been thinking.”
“Uh-oh. Every time a man says that, it means he’s thinking of dumping you.”
“Not exactly, but…”
“And that’s another one that means the same thing. Been nice knowing you, Henry. Stop the car now, so’s I can get out? Pop the trunk, let me get my things? Okay?”
“It’s not that.” He felt helpless, but he stopped the car. “Just listen a minute, would you? I said I was going to get mad, didn’t I?” She nodded. “Well, maybe it’s not showing, but I really am mad right now. What I did last night to those two, I’m not proud of what I did, but it had to be done. Same as I don’t really like squashing bugs, but you gotta do it sometimes.”
“You’ve told me this.”
“And there’s more bugs to be squashed.”
“By you?”
“By me, like I said. And I don’t want you to get mixed up in this, Jeanine. I don’t mind them arresting me and throwing me in jail or whatever if they catch me. But you’ve got kids, Jeanine, and they need you.”
